Whiskey, and bourbon in particular, is a spirit full of rich flavors and it comes with an even richer history. Unfortunately, newcomers often find it unapproachable and intimidating. If you’ve never found a way to enjoy whiskey besides hiding it behind the syrupy shadow of coca-cola then this recipe is for you.
What you’ll need:
- Good Bourbon (Four Roses Yellow Label, Henry McKenna, or Old Granddad are my favorites for value and taste)
- Simple Syrup
- High Quality Bitters (Look for TOPO for some seriously unique bitters)
- Maraschino Cherries
- Orange
- Ice
- In a rocks glass, stir 2 ounces of bourbon, 1/3 ounce of simple syrup, and 4 dashes of bitters.
- Add a healthy handful of ice. The rocks glass should be nearly full of ice. Stir until the ice melts to the same level as the whiskey.
- Cut a thick slice of orange peel and twist or squeeze it into the glass, then set it on top of the ice.
- Toss in two maraschino cherries and stir one last time
- Enjoy! (responsibly)
This recipe is just a baseline, but if you are new to the whole whiskey thing, feel free to add more simple syrup, cherries, orange peel, or even an orange slice to adjust the drink to your tastes- after all that’s the whole point of making cocktails at home. Sure, you could order an Old Fashioned at any bar, and maybe you have, but mixing at home ensures you can adjust a drink to your own tastes.
If you have ever aspired to learn to enjoy whiskey then this cocktail is a great place to start. A gateway to truly appreciating this complex spirit, the Old Fashioned is for everyone who wants to gently ease their way into the world of whiskey. As always – enjoy responsibly. Cheers!
